BrAnD nEw CoLoUr!! aka product review aka ugh

yeah.. so… i totally bought this polish on an impulse, i was at the drugstore which is the most exciting store in town, besides the lcbo i guess, and i was like, well im already here, i might as well buy some nailpolish too. makes sense. this was one of revlons BRAND NEW SHADES and i was fooled into thinking baby blue polish with pink and blue sparklies that looked like a birthday cake would translate well into a nail polish. and im also trying to be open minded about glitter polishes now. well, despite looking deceptively like a super yummy fun birthday cake in the bottle, this stuff kinda missed the mark of awesome by about 5 yards.  the baby blue base is thin thin thin, i mean, how opaque can it be if its gotta show the glitter? so i put a coat of white on underneath. to be fair, the white i have is also cheap and crappy.  then in order to make it actually look blue, i had to put on 3 coats of this stuff. not to mention there was like 1 glitter piece per brush stroke, so in order to make there be more glitter i had to keep applying and applying. it literally took like 19 hours for this to dry, i had so many layers on. OH YEAH!!! and also!!!! even with a hundred coats, i still didnt think it was glittery enough, so i ended up putting on a holographic sparkle topcoat on top!! it was like a millimetre thick. in the pic with the bottle, check out my pinkie, i had to redo that one the next day (i smudged it before the 19 hour mark in which it finally dried) and didnt bother to put on a glitter topcoat so you can see how that finger is less sparkly.  in sum, this stuff prlly wont get used much. maybe for toes. maybe for sacrifice to the nailpolish gods.

wood grain nails

ok so this is kind of a cheat, i didn’t actually do all ten fingers. you can pretend i did though.  i thought a wood grain mani would be awesome, but it’s not like i have all sorts of brown nailpolish to choose from. the closest i had was a dark nude, or alternatively, i had a ‘greige’ that was a really really popular nail colour in the fall. so i really just had two appropriate colours, black and dark nude. it came out a little flat, woulda been cooler if i had all sorts of shades of brown to work with. so i didn’t like this all that much and ended up taking it off after 2 nails. but i thought id take some pics and post it here to see what the response was and if maybe it was worth trying again if i ever get more woody colours. also this woulda looked better with a matte topcoat but i didn’t plan on keeping it so i didn’t get that far.

i bet you didn’t even know that justin bieber did a collab with nicole by opi and has a line of nail polish colours. i have no idea who decides which famous people will translate well into nail polish.  what do shrek, the muppets, jbiebs, nicki manaj and the kardashians all have in common? why, they all have their own line of nailpolish of course! why? not sure.  the purple glitter on this mani is One Less Lonely Girl. if you don’t know what the hell that means you must watch the justin bieber documentary never say never. like… you must watch it anyways, its awesome!!  the glitter went on nice and thick, lots of glitter in this formula. underneath the glitter is a purple colour by Gosh, which is a nice brand with good coverage and opacity.  these are both my buddy sheena’s, i did these while staying at her apartment while she wasn’t there.  she has a predilection for sparkly glitter polishes and i don’t, but after this i think i might invest in some more glitters.

no flash

flash. makes the glitter look sparse. it wasn't, i promise.

product review!!!! sally hansen salon effects

so i bought these nailpolish strips like a year ago, but its not like buying a bottle of polish that lasts you years; you only get a couple of wears out of one package. so i was “saving them for a special occasion” which of course never really came up.. or i always had other ideas i wanted to do w my nails and this just fell by the wayside. actually i brought them to vegas in the fall thinking they’d be super quick and i could just stick em on in the plane or something, but i opened the package on the plane and this nasty nailpolish smell wafted up, the guy sitting beside me was like “woah what is that!!” and i had to bury them in my bag so the smell wouldn’t make anyone sick.  if you open the package and don’t use them right away, they dry out and won’t work. these come with 2 separate packages, so fortunately i only wasted one. ordinarily you’d get 2 applications out of em, possibly with some leftovers. even though this pack wasn’t opened, i suspect the fact that they are like a year old may have something to do with the results.. ok so here’s the review: the set comes w a helpful tip sheet that tells you how to prepare yr nails for the strips. follow it. one thing it says is that you need to “use warm hands for max flexibility and stretch.” well i have perpetually freezing cold hands and no matter what i could not warm them up. i had to resort to getting a heating pad, wrapping my hands plus the strips in the pad, and putting them on once they seemed warmish (they never really got that warm, they are like ice cubes!) once the strips/nails were warm, the strips wrapped to the shape of the nail much much better. for warm-blooded individuals this prolly won’t be such a problem. lesson #1, NAILS MUST BE WARM. another problem i had was after you trim them to the length of yr nails, you have all this excess that is hard to trim just to the perfect shape, even using the nail file/wooden stick it comes with for just such a purpose. with nailpolish, the excess stuff on yr skin will wear off by the next day espesh if you shower. i have no idea what will happen w this stuff. it is still kinda wrapped around the tips of my nails, and feels like i have stickers on my nails which aren’t totally bonded at the tips and could catch on fabric and stuff. you can really see what i mean in the last photo, thats why i included it even though it looks shitty. if you really keep working at em you can smooth em out, which i did since that pic, but still. im wondering if these were fresher and warmer if they’d just have melded to my nails better, so i dont want to give an unfair review. the neat thing is they come in all sorts of awesome designs now.. there were christmas ones, and avril lavigne did a collab and there’s avril lavign-y ones. if that excites anyone anymore. they look really awesome but the edges are folding up a bit which makes me concerned about their longevity. i have heard other girls say they last forever. i’ll have to see about that. i already have a chip out of my pinky, i have no idea how. overall, they are shiny and smooth and the design is eye-catching, but it took me like 3 hours (with all the hand-warming prep and trying to remove all the excess) so def not a quick mani. plus the packs are like 9 dollars, you get ~2 applications, which is way more $$ per mani than a regular bottle of polish, but way less than a salon mani.  id say try it, but im not going to be making a habit of buying these.

nail framing

i get most of my nailpolish from drugstores, rather than beauty supply stores cuz A: its cheaper! main reason. and B: cuz deep river doesn’t have any. my friend told me that shoppers was having a nailpolish sale which was really exciting to me but we dont have one of those either so i had to wait until a trip to toronto to get my fix. Gosh is a brand ive never seen anywhere except at shoppers drug mart but they have really enticing makeup colours, and a few neat nailpolish colours. these were on sale 2 for $10 woot woot! i got this nice dark nude/brown/beige colour, and an orangey/coral, which i think is an awesome colour for right now. when you line your cuticles with it though, it kind of looks like blood when you catch it out of the corner of your eye. i wasnt hugely satisfied with this mani and i was told that it looked like my cuticles were bleeding. not a good look. incidentally, my cuticles were the worse for wear in this photo because also when i was in toronto i got a salon manicure. As is usually the case at salons they clipped my cuticles which is super gross and i totally ended up with frayed cuticles and hangnails!!! ew noooooooooo!!  like, is that a normal occurrence after having your cuticles trimmed in a manicure?? anyone?? anyways, sorry about that, they are somewhat starting to get better now. oo i also bought this sick spiky ring from topshop at the bay!! at yorkdale. i love spikes.  but yeah.. the nail framing thing is hard, the lines are kinda wonky but its a neat look with the right colours.. maybe dont frame them in red, just sayin.
